This is Spartacus?!

A new show is slated to hit the tube in January, 2010. It will be on Starz and will give us another ultra-violent glimpse into the ancient Roman world. If the story is familiar to you, it should be. It was originally turned into a movie by director Stanley Kubrick, starring Kirk Douglas as the gladiator “Spartacus” who led a revolt in central Italy during the Servile Wars.

Starz version of the story looks to zoom in a bit on the life of a gladiator, and of course sensationalizing it a bit to make for an interesting tale for modern sensibilities.

Rumor Volat: The Eagle of the Ninth Being Made Into a Movie

There are reports that the novel, The Eagle of the Ninth is being turned into a movie.

The story, published in 1954 by Rosemary Sutcliff, tells the story about a young Roman who sets out to find the truth behind the disappearance of a legion in Roman Britain just after the construction of Hadrian’s wall. If you are interested in reading the novel, check out Google’s copy of the book available online.

Caesar Comes to Miami!

For those of you interested in ancient Roman history, the Arsht Center is hosting the play, Julius Caesar! Here is the description:

A world torn by greed and lust! In Rome, Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great are fighting a civil war, while in Egypt, Ptolemy and his sister Cleopatra fight for the throne.
